National Night Out 2013

Making s’mores on Tulare Ave with Albany PD

I love that National Night Out exists.  National Night whut??  Yes, National Night Out.  Each August, on the first Tuesday of the month, neighbors across the country get together to meet, mingle, and talk about crime and city issues.  So why do I love that it exists?  It is the only time of year where city officials, such as the mayor, city council, and fire and police departments head out into their communities and say “Here is what is going on.  What can we do to help.”

For the past 10 years I have helped to coordinate National Night Out: 8 years on my old block in El Cerrito, and now for the past 2 years on my current block in Albany/Berkeley.

If you are concerned about what is happening in your city, concerned about neighborhood issues, concerned about neighborhood crime, then please consider hosting a block party next year in your neighborhood.  What better way to get to know your neighbors, and eat some good food in the process!
